English Language Learner Program
English Language Learner Program (Grades 1-8):
Bilingual students for whom English is a secondary language, or who are in transition learning English, are eligible to receive academic and/or language assistance through the Fremont School District 79 English Language Learner (ELL) program.
Parents will be notified if students qualify for this program. Students are referred for screening according to a home language survey. All screening and testing is completed by an English language learner teacher.
English language learners who speak another language in the home also participate in ACCESS to ELLs testing.
Kindergarten English Language Learner Program:
Students who qualify for the kindergarten ELL program will attend the kindergarten ELL program for half of the day in addition to a kindergarten class for the other part of the school day. This program helps students build skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This program builds language, academic, and social skills. Parents will be notified if students qualify for this program. Permission to participate in this program will be received from parents before a student is enrolled in the program. Students are referred for screening according to the Home Language Survey. All screening and testing is completed by an English language learner teacher.
ACCESS for ELLs (English Language Learners):
ACCESS to ELLs is a statewide, standards-based, criterion referenced English language proficiency test designed to measure English language learners’ social and academic proficiency in English. This test is only administered to students who speak a language other than English in the home. ACCESS assesses social and instructional English as well as the language associated with language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies within the school context across four language domains (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee:
The purpose of this state required committee is to give parents an opportunity to provide input on the district’s bilingual/ELL program and to help facilitate communication between the bilingual speaking parents and school/district personnel. The committee is comprised of bilingual parents, ELL teachers, and district administrators. Committee meetings are scheduled four times throughout the school year and take place prior to the parent involvement programs. To join, please contact Carol Bennett at email@example.com.
Language Translation Form
Fremont School District 79 is making sure that it communicates with its non-English speaking parents/guardians. If parents would like the district to communicate in a language other than English, please fill out the language translation form letter and return it to the school office.
