We will talk a lot in class about growth mindset this year. The growth mindset is a way of thinking, that encourages a positive attitude about learning new things, instead of getting frustrated and giving up. When learning something new - in school, sports, and throughout life - it is normal to encounter challenges. The growth mindset sees challenges as a good thing. They are opportunities to grow and get better. We want students to use a growth mindset, as opposed to a "fixed mindset," where challenges are avoided because they are hard.
Research has shown many benefits from a positive growth mindset. A great book about the growth mindset is "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success," by Carol Dweck. The book has great examples of language that helps encourage a growth mindset in students. I've also included a handout below that talks more about mindset.
