Bullying (Reference: Board Policy 7:180, 7:20) Bullying, intimidation, and harassment diminish a student’s ability to learn and a school’s ability to educate. Students are trained to use the text-to-tip line and taught about the See Something, Say Something campaign.
At FSD79, we are committed to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all students in alignment with School Board Policies 2:270 & 7:20.
No person, including a District employee, agent, or student, shall harass, intimidate, or bully a student on the basis of actual or perceived: race; color; national origin; military status; unfavorable discharge status from military service; sex; sexual orientation; gender identity; gender-related identity or expression; ancestry; age; religion; physical or mental disability; order of protection status; status of being homeless; actual or potential marital or parental status, including pregnancy; physical appearance; socioeconomic status; academic status; association with a person or group with one or more of the aforementioned actual or perceived characteristics; or any other distinguishing characteristic. The District will not tolerate harassing, intimidating conduct, or bullying whether verbal, physical, sexual, or visual, that affects the tangible benefits of education, that unreasonably interferes with a student’s educational performance, or that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive educational environment. Examples of prohibited conduct include name-calling, using derogatory slurs, stalking, sexual violence, causing psychological harm, threatening or causing physical harm, threatened or actual destruction of property, or wearing or possessing items depicting or implying hatred or prejudice of one of the characteristics stated above.
When a report of a potential bias incident is received, we follow a consistent multi-step process to ensure a thorough investigation and appropriate response:
1. Initial Review & Investigation: Upon receiving a report, administrators initiate an immediate review, which includes:
- Collecting details about the incident, including the date, location, and individuals involved.
- Conducting sensitive interviews to gather a complete account of the incident.
2. Analysis & Categorization: Using the information gathered, we analyze the behavior, motives, and any history of similar incidents to categorize the severity of the situation.
3. Response & Restorative Actions: Our response is tailored to the severity of the incident to ensure support for the impacted student and education/discipline for the offending student.
Our goal is to repair student dynamics, foster understanding, and ensure every student feels safe and respected at school. Parents/guardians of students involved in these matters are to be contacted the day the report is made to the greatest extent possible.
