Fremont Middle School students hauled away weeds and other invasive species in the Lake County Forest Preserve’s forest located behind Fremont’s west campus schools as part of an annual community service project for the 230 eighth graders.
As part of their unit on civic involvement, students also volunteered at the Feed My Starving Children site in Libertyville to help pack dried goods to ship to places like South America and Southeast Asia. Students packaged items like rice, dehydrated vegetables and soy protein meals. The volunteer work there helped the center package nearly 100,000 meals to needy children throughout the world. In addition, they helped out at Bernie’s Book Bank in Lake Bluff.
Social studies teachers started the service program as a way to teach students about being responsible citizens. The program has expanded to provide students with different volunteer options.
